Windrush: Portrait of a Generation (2018)
A photo-story by Jim Grover

This photo-story shone a light on the lives and traditions of some of the first generation migrants living in south London. The work was created over 11 months in 2017 and 2018 to recognise and celebrate the 70th anniversary, in June 2018, of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush.

Windrush: Portrait of a Generation was first exhibited in the Oxo Gallery on London’s south Bank from May 23rd-June 10th, 2018, to critical acclaim (‘One of 2018’s must see shows’) and extensive national media coverage. Some 13,000 visitors came to the exhibition over its 17 day run, a record for the gallery, of which 63% were of ethnic minorities, and mostly with Caribbean heritage.

The exhibition has been re-exhibited five times with well over 20,000 visitors.

The photo-story was curated by Katy Barron, who is the curator of Windrush: A Voyage through the Generation which marks the 75th anniversary in 2023.

You can find out more about Windrush: Portrait of a Generation at its website.

A 246 page book (£25) accompanied the exhibition, which can be acquired directly from the website or from Amazon.
